2010 International Society for Urban Health Board Elections
Candidate for Member at Large
Dr. Diana Silimperi
Dr. Diana Silimperi is Vice President at Management Sciences for Health, where she leads the Center for Health Services. She is a pediatrician and epidemiologist, educated at Duke University Medical School and the Centers for Disease Control, with 25 years of experience leading the implementation of primary health care (PHC) in developing countries. Throughout her career, Dr. Silimperi has been an advocate for the special health needs of the urban poor. She served as Director, Urban Volunteer Program in Bangladesh in the late 1980s, initiating an innovative urban surveillance system among urban poor communities and utilizing community volunteers to provide treatment for common childhood illness and family planning. In the 1990s, she spearheaded PHC in the urban slums of Lagos, implementing a community-based partnership between private practitioners, local drug sellers and community based organizations. Since that time, she has continued to champion, design and implement urban health research, training and projects, specifically focused on the underserved poor. Diana is one of the founding members of ISUH; her vision for the Society includes the development of an urban research agenda aimed at filling gaps in the evidence base for delivering PHC in urban settings, and its role as “the” organization to monitor progress made in urban areas towards attaining the MDGs.
