Dr. Siddharth Agarwal, MBBS

Dr. Siddharth Agarwal, MBBS,  has been championing the cause of health and wellbeing of urban poor since March 2002. He is presently Executive Director of Urban Health Resource Centre, which aims to address health and nutrition issues of the urban poor through a consultative and knowledge-sharing approach in partnership with government and civil society. From March 2002 – October 2005 he was Country Representative and Urban Health Director of the USAID supported Environmental Health Project (EHP) which evolved into the UHRC.

He is a physician by training and has over 22 years experience in the fields of medicine, research and programming in community health and nutrition, advocacy and policy support to the Government of India. He has lectured extensively at national and international conferences, seminars, universities, academic centers, policy and programmatic workshops. He is Adjunct Faculty in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, USA and Professorial Lecturer in Global Health at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.  He is a member of Government of India Committees and State Government Committees, including the Government of India's Task Force on Urban Health, set up to recommend to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare strategies for improving urban health care. He is also a member on the Executive Board of the International Society of Urban Health. Prior to 2002, he worked with CARE India where he provided technical and programmatic support to projects for community-based maternal, child and newborn health and nutrition. Earlier in his career he was a Medical Officer with Government of Uttar Pradesh.

He has written more than 50 articles on urban health and presented over one hundred and twenty papers on different aspects of urban health at international and national conferences including over 20 papers at ICUH. He has lectured on Urban Health at Indian and US academic institutions. He has been on the scientific committee for ICUH 2007 and is a member of the Steering Committee ICUH 2009. He is on the panel of reviewers for Journal of Urban Health, Indian Journal of Community Medicine, and Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved.
